A very well crafted app that does what you expect : let you quickly get your unicode characters.

I mostly got this app so that I can quickly find umlauts, as I don’t have a German Keyboard set up, and naturally it could be very nice if I ever get more into web design and development. I like the idea of quickly being able to grab symbols and icons. I’m not sure how easily it is to add my own yet- as I just downloaded it, so I am really hoping it is easy. Being a designer, it would be nice to be able to add my own collections of icons and symbols for easy access. But what I really wanted to say, is that I am not sure why but one of the settings „Letterlike“ is showing up duplicated in my settings list and I am not sure why… like 30 times duplicated.... And for some reason I cannot seem to disable Emocons and Hebrew, which I really don’t want to be looking at the whole time. Everything that is on the list, should be able to be removed in my opinion… Otherwise, I am pretty excited about this tool and look forward to using it.
Thanks for adding Hebrew letters, responsive developer!
This small app is really helping me in a day-to-day basis. As a web developer, I also often need to swtich between the developer and designer mode and they made that dead simple. No more searching in the special characters service thats burried down the OS and no more searching on the Internet!
Noticed it doesn’t seem to work with Mac OS 10.11. Is an update in the works?
This app will help save you time getting uncommon characters into your work. Instead of clicking through to Apples Character Viewer and inserting from there, you click on the icon in the menu bar once, then the character you want once. This copies the character to your clipboard. You then just paste it wherever your cursor was. It effectively saves several steps when inserting an uncommon character. It can also copy the html entity to the clipboard, though I do not use that feature. For its limited feature palette, its a perfectly good and useful tool. Adding a few more Latin characters (ō and ū) would make it perfect. Much cheaper than PopChar too.
Why is the app so slow? This app (Special Characters) works much faster and free...
Its excellent, but I would use it so much more if it could search all of the Unicode code space, not just the thousand-odd characters that it supports now.
Great and helpfull little App.
100x easier to use than OSXs character viewer. My favorite feature is the developer mode where it copies the HTML entity to the clipboard, avoiding the tedious task of looking up the entity code.
Like stated in the other review, I generally like this utility but it is missing a quite a few characters Id like to use like the stars or pointers like these: ► ▻
Love the app. I can easily find most characters I need, and copy their HTML entities to the clipboard. Awesome. However, every time I need to log in (which isnt often, granted) the Characters app pops up. It should do what all the other menu bar apps do: sit there in the menu bar, closed, until I open it.
What is the point of copying text? So I can paste it. I would love to see Characters paste text too. Theres a small lag that occurs when I copy any selection, and having it paste the text would make the process more seemless.
Love it. InDesign has a Glyphs panel that allows you to find these glyphs, but its poorly thought of and slow to find what you need. Pop this guy in the bar when your typing and find what you need. Then when going to web and using characters in design, one click and I have the HTML character. Saves a load of time and disctracting back-and-forth.
so convenient! but i cant find Reference Makr(※). I think Itll be better if you can support more function in next update. ex) character or character group sort.
I love that this gives me quick access to characters I might need in a site design. What would be REALLY useful is if the app could also provide me with more than just the HTML entity for a character… Id love to be able to get the CSS escape for characters (those are always a pain to find), and perhaps the decimal version of the HTML entity would be useful, too. Also, perhaps a way to convert a character I already have in my clipboard to one of those alternative encodings. Giving this version three stars—its got great potential to be an app I keep in my system tray 24/7.
When I saw the update for this app I was exicted that it might finally include more of the complete set. Unfortunately, adding emoji is heading more towards a "chat application addon" than a real tool. Emoji for developers .. Emoji for designers .. Really? Using the same number of clicks I can access the built in Character Viewer that has access to a much larger library. This interface has wonderful potential, but the content inside is lacking. Add a ton of unicode on to this and I would rate it much higher, without it, Ive just got two icons that do the same thing. 90% of the time my mouse goes for the Character Viewer.
Ive been looking for an app like this forever. Its well organized and I love it
Great app! Its been updated with a few missing characters that were not in the 1.0 version, so thank you guys so much. One fraction is missing, however: ⅔ ⅓ is included with the app, so ⅔ should be as well. Keep up the good work.
Or you could just press command + alt + T Waste of 3 dollars.
